Welcome to the IMA

The Independent Movers Association, Inc. ("IMA") is a private organization with the purpose of providing consulting, training, advocacy, and support services for motor carriers and consumer shippers. Since our founding, the IMA has grown with an education and service focused emphasis. The IMA encourages continuing education, safety, professionalism, and integrity among all its motor carrier associates.

The philosophy of the IMA is that the satisfaction of the consumer shipper should be the issue of central importance for all moving companies. If consumer shippers are satisfied with the service provided to them, then business will grow and profits will follow.

Is your Mover a member in good standing with the IMA?

Being an IMA associate member is a privilege for moving companies and moving brokers and not a right. In order for a moving company or a moving broker to receive and maintain membership as part of the IMA they must abide by the IMA's code of ethics governing operations.

Moving companies and moving brokers will be terminated from the IMA if they loose their operating authority, and/or if they are unresponsive to consumer inquiries and complaints, and/or do not maintain mandated levels of insurance or bond coverage, and/or have a pattern of consumer complaints out of proportion to the quantity of business performed.

Is your Mover properly licensed and insured?

WARNING: Do not hire an unlicensed moving company! Interstate moving companies are required to have ACTIVE authority with the United States Department of Transportation and maintain Cargo and Liability insurance policies. BEFORE you hire a mover it is strongly advised that you verify that the Moving Company has an ACTIVE license, is properly insured, has resolved any complaints filed against it, and participates in a neutral arbitration program.
